Baobab Tree
I have been a fan of baobab trees for years. Until 2006 I had only seen them in the dry season when there are no leaves and all you see is this incredible network of skinny branches. The story goes that the Baobab tree was very vain, self-loving, always bragging about how beautiful it was. The other trees in the forest got tired of hearing that, so they complained to their creator. The creator listened and decided to teach the Baobab a lesson. He uprooted the tree and replanted it, crown down. So now, in the dry season, all those small, skinny, bare branches look like the roots of the tree.

A Baobab Tree
The baobabs (Adansonia) are a genus of eight species of trees, native to Madagascar (the centre of diversity, with six species), and Africa and Australia (one species in each). The species reach heights of between 5-25 m (exceptionally 30 m) tall, and up to 7 m (exceptionally 11 m) in trunk diameter. They are noted for storing water inside the swollen trunk. All occur in seasonally arid areas, and are deciduous, shedding their leaves during the dry season. Some are reputed to be many thousands of years old, though as the wood does not produce annual growth rings, this is impossible to verify; few botanists give any credence to these claims of extreme age.

Baobab Tree - Kruger National Park
Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) is a member of the Bombacaceae family. It was named after the French naturalist and explorer Michel Adanson, who described Adansonia digitata in Senegal in 1750.
Other names for the Baobab include Cream of Tartar tree (which can be made from the seeds), the sour gourd tree, the monkey-bread tree (because they eat the seed pods) and lemonade tree (because of a drink that can be made from the sap). In Afrikaans it is called kremetartboom; in isiZulu the isiMuku, umShimulu or isiMuhu; in Tsonga the ximuwu; in Setswana the mowana, and in Venda the muvhuyu.
The baobab tree has an enormous barrel-like trunk which may reach a diameter of 9m and a height of 18m. It is also one of the longest lived trees in the world; radio-carbon dating has measured ages of over 2,000 years.

Contemplating Under a Pregnant Tree
According to African legend, the Baobab wanted to become the most beautiful tree of all. When it realized that this was not possible, it put his head into the ground, so only the roots pointed heavenward. Today the tree with the root-like branch structure has become characteristic of the African grasslands.
The baobab or bottle tree grows to a height of 22m; the circumference of the trunk can measure up to 10m. The dry pulp of the long cucumber-shaped fruit is edible and its seed produces oil. Baobab trees shed their leaves in the dry season to reduce evaporation, producing the root-like branch effect.
